
Joel graduated from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) with a first-class honours degree in Medicine in 2003. After completing his internship and residency at Liverpool Hospital, Joel specialised in general practice, obtaining the Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP). He completed further studies and research, and received a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Public Health and Community Medicine from UNSW.
Joel has worked as a general practitioner in various practices across Sydney and Canberra while also working as a university lecturer, teaching and conducting research focusing on improving end-of-life care provided to people living in the community and helping people plan and make decisions about their future healthcare (called advance care planning).
Since 2014, Joel’s clinical work has focused on providing high-quality general practice care to older people in residential aged care homes and independent living units. His other role is at UNSW medical school, where he is the Head of the Discipline of General Practice and Associate Professor of General Practice.
In his spare time, Joel likes to spend time with his family and two young children. He likes to dabble in photography and videography.
